Smax Energy

A multi-megawatt shipment of SMX-N Series bifacial solar modules has been delivered for a utility-scale solar project in Northern Europe, marking the first commercial installation of Smax Energy modules in the region.

The order, placed by a regional EPC contractor, covers 730W bifacial variants for a single-axis tracker installation. Delivery was completed via sea-freight, with all modules clearing pre-shipment flash testing and EL imaging quality gates before leaving the production facility.

Why Northern Europe is a demanding market for utility-scale PV

Northern European utility-scale solar projects place specific demands on module reliability and performance. Selling modules into the region typically requires three things:

  • Strong low-irradiance performance for winter generation under reduced sunlight
  • Robust mechanical loading specifications for snow loads on tracker structures
  • Proven long-term degradation profiles, particularly under cold-weather operating conditions

For Smax Energy, qualifying the SMX-N Series against this set of requirements opens commercial routes into one of the more technically rigorous PV markets globally.

“Selling into Northern Europe means your modules have to perform across some of the most variable conditions for utility-scale PV anywhere,” said a Smax Energy commercial representative. “We’re not pretending the project itself is unusual at the gigawatt level. What’s significant is that the technical and commercial due diligence checks were passed, and that opens the door for the rest of our pipeline in the region.”

Technical qualification for the project

The project-specific technical qualification covered several areas:

  • SMX-N Series bifacial gain validated against the project’s site-specific albedo modelling
  • Temperature coefficient performance suitable for low-irradiance winter generation
  • Compliance with IEC 61701 salt-mist resistance for coastal site conditions
  • Full traceability from cell batch through to module serial number, supporting the EPC’s bankability documentation

What this means for the European pipeline

The shipment opens active commercial discussions across several other Northern European markets, with additional deliveries expected in the coming quarters. For utility-scale developers evaluating bifacial modules for tracker projects, the SMX-N Series product page provides full technical specifications, and the Solutions section covers application engineering support.
